S+be/V + as adj/ adv + as + {noun/pronoun}

He is as old as my father (is).

He drives as carefully as I (do).

- Ở thể phủ định và nghi vấn ta có thể dùng so + adj/ adv as

His job is not so difficult as mine.

 Mary didn't write her lessons as carefully as she does.

- Để diễn đạt thêm các mức độ khác nhau của sự so sánh, ta có thể thêm các trạng từ “just/ exactly” (vừa bằng, chính xác) hoặc nearly almost (gần như)

I am exactly/just as tall as you.

He earns almost/ nearly as much money as you.

– Sau “as” phải là một đại từ nhân xưng chủ ngữ, không được là một đại từ tân ngữ.

Peter is as tall as I. (ĐÚNG)        Peter is as tall as me. (SAI)

S + be/V+adj/ adv (ngắn) -er + than + {noun/pronoun}

Today it is hotter than it was yesterday.

He works harder than he did last year.

S+be/V + more adj/ adv (dài) + than + {noun/pronoun

She is more careful than her mother (is).

He sings more beautifully than other competitors.

- Những tính từ hai âm tiết mà tận cùng bằng y (y – ier), ow, er, et thì so sánh như tính từ ngắn.

quiet - quieter      clever – cleverer      simple - simpler

happy - happier      narrow – narrower

– Tính từ ngắn có tận cùng bằng một nguyên âm + phụ âm (trừ W, X, Z) thì gấp đôi phụ âm cuối.

Big-  bigger         red → redder              hot - hotter

- Chỉ một số trạng từ có đuôi –er, bao gồm: faster, quicker, sooner, later, earlier.

- Dùng dạng thức chủ ngữ của đại từ sau than, không được dùng dạng tân ngữ.

This chair is more comfortable than the other.

He speaks Spanish more fluently than I.

- Farther dùng cho khoảng cách, further dùng cho thông tin hoặc các trường hợp trừu tượng khác. If you want further information, please call to the agent. The distance from your house to school is farther than that of mine.

Để nhấn mạnh mức độ, ta sử dụng:

+ much/ a lot/ far (a big difference)

+ So sánh hơn

A watermelon is much sweeter than a lemon.

+ little/ few/ a bit/ slightly (small difference) + So sánh hơn

That shirt is little cheaper than that one.

- Danh từ cũng được dùng để diễn đạt phép so sánh hơn/ kém. February has fewer days than March. - Khi so sánh 1 người/ vật với tất cả những người/ vật khác phải thêm “else” sau anything, anybody... She is more beautiful than anyone/ anybody else in her school.

S+V+ the adj/ adv (ngắn) -est + (in/ of...)

John is the tallest boy in the family.

S + V + the most adj/adv (dài) + (in/ of...)

 He did this work the most successfully.

in: đi với danh từ tổ, nhóm, nơi chỗ: in the group, in the world...

Nam is the tallest boy in my class.

 of: đi với danh từ chỉ thời gian: of the year, of one's life...

 Birthday is the happiest day of my life.

– Để nhấn mạnh mức độ ta sử dụng: by far, easily, nearly,...+ So sánh nhất

Mario's is by far the best restaurant in town.

I'm nearly the oldest in the class.

- Một số tính từ hoặc trạng từ mang tính tuyệt đối (extreme/perfect/ supremel top/ absolutel prime) hoặc chỉ tính chất duy nhất (unique/primary/only) hoặc chỉ kích thước hình học (square round) thì không được dùng so sánh bậc nhất, hạn chế dùng so sánh hơn kém, nếu buộc phải dùng thì bỏ more.

One of the + so sánh nhất + noun (số nhiều) + V(số ít): (một trong những)

1. Sở hữu cách

Incorrect: His drawings are as perfect as his instructor. (So sánh các bức tranh với người chỉ dẫn)

Correct: His drawings are as perfect as his instructor's. (instructor's = instructor's drawings)

2. Dùng thêm “that of” cho danh từ số ít

Incorrect: The salary of a professor is higher than a secretary. (So sánh salary với secretary)

Correct: The salary of a professor is higher than that of a secretary. (that of = the salary of)

3. Dùng thêm “those of” cho các danh từ số nhiều

Incorrect: The duties of a policeman are more dangerous than a teacher. (So sánh duties với teacher)

Correct: The duties of a policeman are more dangerous than those of a teacher. (those of = the duties of)

4. So sánh hơn kém không dùng “than” (giữa 2 đối tượng): The + so sánh hơn + of the two +N

Harvey is the smarter of the two boys.

Of the two books, this one is the more interesting.

S+V+ số lượng danh từ + so sánh hơn + than +{noun/pronoun}

So sánh kép (Càng...càng...)

1 tính từ

Tính từ/ Trạng từ ngắn:

S + be/ V + adj/adv-er + and + adj/ adv-er

The weather gets colder and colder.

Tính từ/Trạng từ dài:

S + be/V + more and more + adj/ adv (dài)

His daughter becomes more and more intelligent.

2 tính từ

The + so sánh hơn + S + be/ V, the + so sánh hơn + S + be/ V.

The more intelligent he is, the lazier he becomes.

- Trong câu so sánh kép, nếu tân ngữ là một danh từ thì ta đặt danh từ ấy ngay sau tính từ so sánh.
